We’ve all been to one.  Many of us have been involved in one.  And many more of you have planned, hosted, enjoyed, (survived), and celebrated your own.  As I now stand at the outset of my own engagement, I am like a sponge ready to soak up the collective wedding wisdom that abounds in my community.  Tell us what we need to know!

Post in comments.  Post on our Facebook walls.  Send us emails.  Call us.  Tweet us.  Do whatever you must, just don’t keep your experience, advice, and counsel to yourself!

Oooh! You’re getting married. Congratulations!

Well, I don’t know what to say but you should be careful of the shoes you wear on your wedding day. I’ve heard many girls complaining about it.

We become very sensitive to comments, actions, attitudes and behaviors that don’t line up with what we believe should be the “correct” way to be treated, etc. Blow all that away and realize that the sensitivity comes from the Holy Ghost and it’s meant for good not evil or judging one another. This will be needed after the marriage….before the marriage EVERYTHING is honky dorrie! Many blessings and God’s richest legacy be over you as you fulfill His will in the earth!

From Nate: during the wedding planning, don’t EVER say “I don’t care” when she asks for your opinion. In truth, you really might not give a crap what color the napkins are, but to her that means you don’t care about the wedding. At least ask her to give you some options to chose between.

From Brittany: after you’re married, you will undoubtedly get in silly arguments while adjusting to living together. When this happens, get naked. No one can stay mad at your when you’re naked. p.s. this is Nate’s #1 tactic

The wedding — One of the few places when a man cries (if he is the groom), he is taken to be even MORE of a man… However, those men (groomsmen or audience) who are caught crying at a wedding — they will be taken as weak sissy little boys with the emotional security of a 3rd grade girl.

My advise: Rob, Let the tears POUR!!!!

have dates during your engagement that you promise not to talk one bit about the wedding… turn your focus back to the reason you’re getting married to that person :)

Take a few days (ideally a week) off of work before the wedding. Even if you think you have all the details covered, invariably things come up. Also, expect some attrition and invite more people than you expect to the wedding/reception.

Ben and I are very excited for you two! :)

Start EARLY!!!! Especially with ordering your dress, veil and shoes! Mine took almost 9 months to arrive and be ready for pick-up at the store.
And start early with deciding what your bridesmaids and groomsmen should wear! It can take a while to get them all lined up.
Make sure your best man and maid-of-honor know what is expected of them ahead of time so they can help and assist you as much as possible. If they know what you want and need they will love helping you!
DELEGATE! Don’t try to do it all by yourself. Believe me, wedding planning grows as you move along and the list seems to get longer and longer and more detailed as you get closer to your special day. Ask trusted friends and family members for help. Make sure they know what you want or let them surprise you with their ideas, creativity and ways of making things happen.
Besides that, ENJOY your planning time. Take breaks and talk about other things than just the wedding details (even though it can be hard because the excitement and joy are so great).
Have a wonderful and fun time planning and getting ready for the big day!!!
